Cd/dvd drive for windows vista home premium 32 bit?

The cd/dvd drive has stopped working on my Dell Inspiron 1520.I have been advised to buy an external drive but i do not know what one to buy as there is such a wide choice and don't know much about them.I also have an Advent 6651 and i would like if possible to be able to burn cd's and dvd's on both.
