Why do black people say "we didn't land on Plymouth rock, Plymouth rock landed on us"?

I'm from Australia and I was wondering what the connection is between black people and Plymouth rock. I read up on Plymouth rock, and it has absolutely nothing to do with black people, so why do they say it?
